Earth Day Beach Cleanup

The PTMSC annual Earth Day beach cleanup brings volunteers together from far and wide to clean the beaches and roadways in our area.

In partnership with WA CoastSavers, volunteers will collect debris and contribute data on their findings to the Ocean Conservancy’s international database. Learn about the impact of past cleanups on our webpage, Coastal Cleanups.

Check-in locations

Join us at either of our check-in locations: Fort Worden State Park or Chimacum Corner Farmstand. At these, you will be given directions to beach locations and supplies like trash bags and gloves.

Fort Worden State Park:

  • From 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., you will find our check-in table outside the PTMSC Museum Building. This is the second building on the left, past the pier.

  • From here, we will be sending participants to local beaches throughout Port Townsend.

Chimacum Corner Farmstand:

  • From 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. you will find our check-in table in the parking lot at 9122 Rhody Dr.

  • From here, participants will have two cleanup options.

    • Option 1 – Beach Cleanup! We will send participants to local beaches throughout the greater Port Hadlock area.

    • Option 2 – Remote Cleanup! Are you feeling up for trekking a few miles on the beach and carrying a load of debris on your back? Well, this option is for you! We are putting together one or two small groups to clean up more remote beach locations. For more information on what this would entail, reach out to Mandi at mjohnson@ptmsc.org.

Return to your check-in location

Return and we will weigh your accomplishments!

As our way of saying thanks, the first 150 participants will receive a $5 gift card for the PT Food Coop, and a $1 off coupon for any item at the Keg and I.

Thank you to our amazing sponsors, PT Food Co-op and Keg and I, for their support!

Thank you to Olympic Disposal for their donated trash services! Additional support for this event is provided through a Public Participation Grant from the WA State Department of Ecology.

Earth Day Beach Clean-Up

Earth Day Beach Clean_FB.jpg

On Saturday, April 20, volunteers from near and far will converge on the Port Townsend Marine Science Center to celebrate Earth Day weekend. After checking in, many will spread out to area beaches at Fort Worden State Park, Fort Flagler State Park, Fort Townsend State Park, Chetzemoka Park and North Beach to pick up trash and debris. Others will be honoring Citizen Science Day, officially one week earlier on April 13, with a BioBlitz at Fort Worden.

Registration will be from 9:30am -1:30pm at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, Natural History Exhibit Building.

The Port Townsend Food Coop will provide $5 gift cards, to be used the same day, for all registered volunteers.

The beach clean-up is part of Washington CoastSavers’ annual effort to remove debris from state beaches. Participants in the Bioblitz will use the free iNaturalist app to make observations of every living species that can be found at Fort Worden in a single day. People of all ages and skill levels are welcome.

More information, including participant pre-registration is available at http://www.coastsavers.org/index.php/washington-coast-cleanup/fort-worden/
