March/April Bean for Bag Spotlight: PT Potential

Transforming Plastic in Port Townsend

Learn more about one of our Bean for Bag recipients and please drop those beans in their jar.

PT Potential works to transform our community's waste plastic into community infrastructure while challenging PT to see its own prospects of moving beyond the plastic economy.  Since beginning formal service in July of 2022, we have diverted over 400 lbs of plastic from landfill.  Most of this weight has been thanks to the Food Co-op's enthusiasm to mitigate their plastic waste, with the remaining percentage thanks to the growing number of citizens making the time to visit us during our bimonthly "pop-up drop-offs".

In 2023 we are excited to 1.) expand our service to include plastic tubs 2.) install a few drop-off bins within the community, and 3.) start producing quality “tiles” for interior application.  We are also having fun experimenting with our new 20 ton press to see what more may be possible with our rudimentary tools.

We are grateful to be a recipient of the beans for bags program and plan to use the donations to acquire new tools and infrastructure such as custom molds, a more accurate scale, heat resistant gloves, a toaster oven and storage bins.  Once acquired, we will be able to make more consistent products and stay organized with the increasing volume of plastic we are collecting.
